Since I've been retired for over a dozen years, the weekends don't have the same importance as they did during my working years. However, I still like a lot of the songs that deal with the time between Friday night and Sunday night, the break from workday routine - for most of us. The first one I recall was a 1966 rockin' song by an Australian group:
Friday on My Mind - Easy Beats (Harry Vanda & George Young)
Ev'rybody seems to nag me
Comin' Tuesday I feel better
Even my old man looks good
Wed'sday just don't go
Thursday goes too slow
I've got Friday on my mind
Be with my girl, she's so pretty"
Small Town Saturday Night - Hal Ketchum (Pat Alger & Hank DeVito)
Bobby told Lucy, "The world ain't round...
Drops off sharp at the edge of town
Lucy, you know the world must be flat
'Cause when people leave town, they never come back"
Saturday Night - Wade Bowen (Paul Wade Bowen & Lee Thomas Miller)
"I came up with the idea simply to write about the guy in the dark corner of the bar who is not enjoying Saturday night like everybody else is," Bowen notes. (from Taste of Country)
"Well hey bartender could you throw those drunk girls out / And don’t you think that band's just a little too loud / Tell that couple in the corner to please go get a room / It’s a damn good party but what am I supposed to do," he sings in the second verse.
"There's nothing quite as lonely as a crowd when you're all alone
And there's nothing but Sunday morning waitin' for me at home"
She Knows What to Do (with a Saturday Night) - Trent Summar & the New Row Mob (Gary Nicholson & Trent Summar)
"She don't cook and she don't clean
she ain't never found the knob on the washing machine
she don't iron and she don't sew
says why waste time foldin' clothes
she ain't never gonna get mama's recipe right
but she knows what to do with a Saturday night"
Saturday Night in Toledo Ohio - John Denver (Randy Sparks)
In an interview with the Toledo Free Press about 7 years ago, Mr. Sparks said that with a rare Saturday night off on a 1967 tour, he and his band members decided to go to Toledo. He got there about 10 pm and found that the city was closed. Someone in the back of the bus suggested (surely in jest) that they bomb the place. No one knew how to make a bomb so it was suggested that someone write a nasty song.
“Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio
Is like being nowhere at all
All through the day, how the hours rush by
You sit in the park, and you watch the grass die.”
Saturday Night - Eagles (Don Henley & Glenn Frey)
"Whatever happened to Saturday night
Finding a sweetheart and holding her tight?
She said, tell me, oh, tell me, was I alright?
Whatever happened to Saturday night?"
Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke (Sam Cooke)
I got some money 'cause i just got paid
How I wish I had someone to talk to
I'm in an awful way"
Saturday Night at the Movies - The Drifters (Cynthia Weil & Barry Mann)
Who cares what picture you see
When you're huggin' with your baby
In the last row in the balcony?…
Saturday in the Park - Chicago (Robert Lamm)
"Saturday in the park,
I think it was the Fourth of July"
"People dancing, people laughing
A man selling ice cream
Singing Italian songs"
Raining on Sunday - Keith Urban (Radney Foster & Darrell Brown)
Storming like crazy
We'll hide under the covers all afternoon
Baby whatever comes Monday
Can take care of itself
'Cause we've got better things
That we can do
When it's raining on Sunday"
Somethin' Bout a Sunday - Michael Peterson (Tim Nichols & Craig Wiseman)
"Sittin' on the swing with her head on my chest
Givin' any worries one day's rest
Suddenly everything's gonna be okay
There's somethin' 'bout a Sunday"
She Misses Him on Sunday the Most - Diamond Rio (Bobby Tomberlin & Steven Dale Jones)
"She misses their Monday night bowling league
When they’d wear their matching shirts
She misses their Wednesday night dinner out
As soon as he got home from work
And Saturday morning sleeping late
Holding each other close
But she misses him on Sunday the most"
That's What I Like About a Sunday - Craig Morgan (Adam Dorsey & Mark Narmore)
Sing along as the choir sways
Every verse of amazing grace
And then we shake the preacher's hand
Go home into your blue jeans
Have some chicken and some baked beans
Pick a backyard football team
Not do much of anything
That's what I love about Sunday"
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Johnny Cash (Kris Kristofferson)
"On the Sunday morning sidewalks, wishin' Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday, makes a body feel alone
And there's nothin' short of dyin', half as lonesome as the sound
On the sleepin' city side walks, Sunday mornin' comin' down."
Easy Like Sunday Morning - The Commodores, Lionel Ritchie (Lionel Ritchie)
But I just can't stand the pain
Girl I'm leaving you tomorrow
Seems to me girl
You know I've done all I can
You see I begged, stole
And I borrowed
Ooh, that's why I'm easy
I'm easy like Sunday morning"
Groovin' On a Sunday Afternoon - The Young Rascals (Felix Cavaliere & Eddie Brigatti)
"I can't imagine anything that's better
The world is ours whenever we're together
There ain't a place I'd like to be instead of
Groovin', down a crowded avenue
Doin' anything we like to do"
Sunday Will Never Be the Same - Spanky & Our Gang (Terry Cashman & Gene Pistilli)
"I remember Sunday morning
I would meet him at the park
We'd walk together hand in hand
'Til it was almost dark
Now I wake up Sunday morning
Walk across the way to find
Nobody waiting for me
Sunday's just another day
Sunday will never be the same
(Sunday will never be the same)
I've lost my Sunday song
He'll not be back again"
Pleasant Valley Sunday - The Monkeys, RIP Davy Jones (Carole King & Gerry Goffin)
"Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care"
Sunday in Memphis - Big House (Monty Byrom, David Neuhauser & Scott Hutchison)
"Sunday in Memphis, It's hallelujah dawn,
I can hear the angels singin', such a beautiful song
Lost here in Memphis, Feelin' so alone,
I can hear the church bells ringin', callin' me back home"
